Despite the loss of Camp Lamoille due to fire last year, our Great Basin Rendezvous lives on! This year, our seventh annual Rendezvous will be held Friday, September 20 through Sunday, September 22, 2019, at the Royal Peacock Opal Mine.
The mine is in the beautiful Virgin Valley adjacent to the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge south and west of Denio, NV. The Royal Peacock Opal Mine offers full camping and RV/trailer spots with 30- or 50-amp hook-ups. Quality bathroom and shower facilities are available along with a fire ring and large grassy area for (hopefully) our bluegrass/folk band Southwind. In comparison, the amenities offered by the Royal Peacock Opal Mine are very similar, if not superior, to those of Camp Lamoille.
Please review this document we prepared (below) that illustrates the camp from a visit we conducted June 30th. Also, check out the mine’s website for much more information: https://www.royalpeacock.com.
The Nevada Mineral Exploration Coalition will cover tent camping cost Friday and Saturday with the usual registration fee, however electrical service for trailers and RVs ($40-$45) will have to be paid by the participant. Call 775.941.0374 to make your reservation for a spot with hook-ups .
The mine is family-owned and is considered a “mom and pop” small miner operation that has been in operation since the 1940s. Not only are the facilities excellent for our event, fee digging for world-class black opal, opalized wood and fossil bones is available for a fee (see this document which includes the special pricing for our group). As in previous GBR gatherings, this is a family event for geologists and their families and friends!
The Royal Peacock Opal Mine is located 120 miles north of Winnemucca off route 140 west of Denio, 110 miles from Winnemucca on State highway pavement, then 10 miles on well-improved dirt road (through the Dufurrena Ponds of the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge where there’s great fishing opportunities https://www.fishidy.com/map/us/nevada/dufurrena-ponds). As in our past Rendezvous, we anticipate grand barbeque dinners both Friday and Saturday nights along with breakfasts hosted by our sponsors.
